Tiffany Style Lights Introduction
Prosperous Home offers a large range of “Tiffany Style Lights” for sale in Australia via our online shop. We refer to the lights as Tiffany Lights in homage to the lighting designer Louis Comfort Tiffany who developed the style of incorporating as well as adapting stained glass for use in lighting.
Tiffany came from a strong design pedigree. His father was jewellery retail magnate Charles Lewis Tiffany. Tiffany was a Lead designer as well as founder of global jewellery house Tiffany and Company. Both father and son’s design work have left an indelible mark on interior design and decoration.
Tiffany Style Lights History
“The production of stained glass lamps has been recorded as part of mankind’s early history. Historians believed that Egyptians as early as the 2nd century BC had become quite adept at creating and producing stained glass. Historians have also discovered artefacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum that date back to the 1st century AD. These dates are amazing but the oldest example of stained glass containing a picture was discovered in Lorsch Abbey, an excavation site in Germany that is estimated to be from the 10th century AD.”
The Stained Glass Lamp developed towards the end of the nineteenth century. Early Lamp are of an Art Nouveau style.
“The term Art Nouveau was coined, in Belgium by the periodical L’Art Moderne to describe the work of the artist group Les Vingt and in Paris by S. Bing, who named his gallery L’Art Nouveau….The distinguishing ornamental characteristic of Art Nouveau is its undulating asymmetrical line, often taking the form of flower stalks and buds, vine tendrils, insect wings, and other delicate and sinuous natural objects; the line may be elegant and graceful or infused with a powerfully rhythmic and whiplike force.”
The Career of Louis Comfort Tiffany
The Tiffany story occurred in New York in the United States of America.
Louis Comfort Tiffany came from an excellent design pedigree, particularly as the son of Jewellery retail magnate Charles Lewis Tiffany. Charles Lewis Tiffany was a founder of global jewellery house Tiffany and Co as well as a great designer.
“Louis Tiffany began his art glass experiments in the early 1880s at the time he was purchasing sheets of commercial window glass from outlets in Brooklyn. On December 1, 1885, he incorporated the “Tiffany Glass Company,” which in 1892 was renamed The “Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company” and then, in 1900, “Tiffany Studios.” At its height, the factory employed more than three hundred workers: designers, artists, glass blowers, and numerous other artisans.
Tiffany’s first commercially produced lamps date from around 1898, though some examples were exhibited at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. In addition to lamps and lamp shades, Tiffany Studios also produced vases, scent bottles, tiles, stained-glass windows, glass mosaics and desk furniture. The company remained in business until 1928.
In 1919, Tiffany established the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation as a retreat for young artists at Laurelton Hall, his summer residence on Long Island. He died in 1933 at the age of 85. From 1933 – c. 1936 the firm’s original “Ecclesiastical” department remained in business in order to complete the firm’s outstanding window commissions.”
The Legacy of Louis Comfort Tiffany
Tiffany was a fierce advocate for the arts. He left much of his estate to a foundation bearing his own name after his death. Many museums in American now display Tiffany’s works.

Tiffany Lamps hold a high monetary value as well as great reverence globally. Most iconic lamps sell for millions of dollars. As an example, in December 2017 an original Tiffany Studios Hanging Head “Dragonfly” floor lamp sold at auction. Sotheby’s New York sold the lamp for $550,000 US.

The importance of letterbox lights Australia…
What is a guest’s first impression when first arriving at your home for a dinner party? It is your letterbox number.
Australia’s forgiving Mediterranean style climate lends itself to outdoor living and dinner parties, making outdoor lights design extremely important. There is nothing like sitting on the patio after a barbecue on a summer night watching the kids play. But choosing an external lights strategy to allow for this simple pleasure can be daunting!
External lights frame the way we use our homes at night, so a good external lighting strategy is critical. Prosperous Home sells a large range of high quality external lights designed in Australia for Australian conditions. This article discusses the first light your guests see, or don’t w’en they arrive at your home at night.
It is embarrassing to have to get out of your car to look for letterbox number. You get there with your phone torch only to find the number isn’t there. The home owner comes out to investigate suspicious behaviour at his mailbox at night. And you the guest have to sheepishly explain that you are looking for number 46. Worst still would be if the occupant came out brandishing a hose! The result could be a wet late dinner guest!
To improve your guest’s way finding experience we therefore recommend installing a letterbox light to illuminate your house number. Letterbox lights can be applied in a variety of ways. My personal favourite is to uplight the letterbox from the front using a spike light. Spike lights are small spotlights attached to a steel spike. They have a swivel mount which can be faced to light a specific direction.
A spike light generally has a high IP rating to protect it from water ingress. They are usually 12 volt lights and operate at a lower voltage than regular electric lights for safety.
Where a spike light is installed in a garden setting it can be installed as a standalone item, however if it is being set into a lawn or trafficable area it is best practise to set it inside of a concrete tundish, or a piece of pipe for protection. This allows the light to sit below the surface of the ground and not fall prey to the lawnmower or the mailman’s feet.

Lighting Colour for residential LED lighting describes the type of white light produced by a light fixture. When purchasing an LED light it is important to consider the light colour and its impacts on your space. This article discusses the best light colours to choose to create a warm comfortable atmosphere in your home. The colour of light produced by a fitting is expressed in Kelvins.
Some general light colours and their characteristics are described in the table below.
|Light Type||Light Colour (Kelvins)||Characteristics|
|A match stick burning||1700 K|
|Candle light||1850 K|
|Incandescent globe||2400 K||Amber glow|
|Soft white globe||2700 K||Amber / yellow|
|Warm white LED globe||3000 K||Warm white, general multipurpose common light colour|
|Warm light||2700 – 3300 K|
|Cool light fluorescent tube||4000 K|
|Cool light||3300 – 5300 K||Brighter light, found in shops, schools, offices and public buildings.|
|Day light||5300 – 6500 K||Blue white light, found in factories, workshops, and hospitals|
Based on the light colours and their characteristics listed in the table above, You can see that lighting for residential applications should generally fall in the Kelvin range below 3300K. Higher Kelvin rated lights should generally be reserved for high detail areas such as workshops and kitchen preparation spaces.
Utilising lights in the lower lighting colour temperature range to layer uplighting effects can also be a good design strategy. As can having multiple lighting strategies for the same space when it is being used for different purposes.

This article is for customers navigating IP ratings and asking the question “ What are IP ratings for lights?” The article provides an explanation of IP ratings followed by example ratings and light fittings available from Prosperous Home with those ratings, as well as useful links to sites explaining IP ratings in more detail.
What Are IP Ratings for lights?
Ingress Protection Ratings for lights deal with the issue of contamination and failure of electrical fittings due to external contaminants and are used to define levels of sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies.
For outdoor, or bathroom lights IP ratings are used to describe the amount of ingress protection the light fitting has against external influences like solids and water and are expressed in a two digit number. The first digit defines the level of protection from solid objects like dust and dirt. The second digit defines the level of protection from the ingress of liquids such as water. The higher the numbers the greater the level of ingress protection.
As an example, the Stockholm garden spike lighthas an IP65 rating. The “6” is defining the level of protection from solid objects like dust and dirt, while the “5” is defining the level of protection from the ingress of liquids such as water. From the table below we can see that this means it provides complete protection from dust while also providing protection against low pressure jets of water from all directions.
Common IP Ratings and Lights Examples
